About the Arena

The amphitheater in Pula, popularly known as the Arena, is a cultural property of national significance. The name comes from the Latin word harena, meaning sand, which covered the central area of the arena. It was built in the 1st century, at a time when Pula was a colonial center under the name Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola.
